a shine of rainbows.

My good friend Kristi wrote a post the other day about how she was watching the movie, Thor and there was a line in it that struck her … and at the risk of sounding like a Stuff Christians Like post (which isn’t even a bad thing, btw) — she posted about how she heard God in the moment of that movie.

God’s funny like that.

Showing up in the unexpected.

I had one of those moments today.

I was watching the movie, A Shine of Rainbows.  The basic story is a couple, who is unable to have children of their own, adopt an 8-year-old boy from an orphanage in Ireland.  The woman is extraordinary in welcoming this insecure, unsure, quiet boy into their lives.  At one point they are out fishing together and the boy summons up the courage to ask her a question that he’s been pondering throughout the story:

Tomas:  Why did you pick me?

Maire:  We picked each other, didn’t we? [pause] Because I loved you.

Tomas:  But you didn’t know me.

Maire:  Oh, but I did.  I watched you.

Tomas didn’t do anything to earn this love.  He felt unworthy, confused and downright lost sometimes — not understanding why this woman was being so kind to him when no one else seemed to take any interest in him.

But she knew him before he knew her.  She chose him.  She loved him.  She invited him into her life to share her love and show him grace.

Sounds familiar…

Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.  No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.  1 John 4:11-12
