hark! hark! whatcha singin’?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:  ipod shuffle is a very interesting thing, especially when traveling for long distances.   and when there is a lot of Christmas music on your ipod that you might or might not have forgotten to press the ‘skip when shuffling’ box…..whoops.

so along comes amy grant on the last leg of my boring I-55 drive, belting out ‘Hark! the Herald Angels Sing…’

so i gently sang hummed belted it with her.

and the lyrics struck me.  this isn’t a song about christmas and the christmas season [or at the very last shouldn’t be confined as such]… it’s a song about easter.  [if you really want to get technical and off on a tangent … read about the history of this hymn.  might totally change the way you hear the song even more]

yes, yes I realize that it talks of christ being born  … but isn’t christ ‘born again’ on easter?  resurrected from this life into the realm of the sacred?  didn’t the people and angels rejoice?  just because it mentions how jesus was a baby, it’s considered christmas-y?

“Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King. Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings;
Mild, he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die…”

perhaps you disagree.  but i’m calling for a vote to sing this one on april 24, 2011.  and you can bet that i’ll at least be blasting amy grant in the car, if i don’t win. 🙂
