Holy Holiness, Batman

If you read my new year resolution post — then you might recall that I’m attempting to live out a verse this year. In the verse, Hebrews 12:14 — I am called to be holy.

What in the world does that mean? I’ve never given the word or concept much thought before choosing this verse — so what does it mean to be holy?

Describing God as holy might bring up images of inspiration, perfection, and awe-inspiring. I’m pretty sure that’s an impossibility to live up to. However, we, as children of God, are also called to be holy.

The most wide-spread definition for holy means to be set apart.

For what?

For me, I think it means to be set apart for a particular purpose. God’s purpose. To think of things through a lens of that is both righteous and humble. To react to things as Jesus might have reacted. To not allow society dictate my thoughts and actions. To gain strength from the one who is the definition of holiness.

In the words of Lynne Chapman, “Being Christian is more than being known for attending a Christian church. It is being holy. It is letting my Christian values permeate my life, every part of it, every minute of the day.”

May God’s holiness permeate my life and my soul, today and everyday.
